Hauora and models of health
Demonstrate understanding of hauora in a health-related context through a model of health.
Food and Nutrition
Food and Nutrition as a Key Area of Learning across the four Health Studies standards.
Key concepts
The official sentence is the whole official definition
hauora is "a Māori philosophy of holistic wellbeing grounded in bodies of mātauranga unique to Aotearoa New Zealand." That wording is shared by the 92008 standard and the first Health Studies Big Idea. Treat it as a definition with edges, not as a prompt to improvise. Mātauranga in that sentence is left as the official phrase — bodies of knowledge unique to Aotearoa New Zealand. This page does not unpack iwi-specific knowledge, rongoā, maramataka, or a history of the word. If you can delete "Māori philosophy" and "mātauranga unique to Aotearoa New Zealand" and the sentence still feels finished, you have replaced hauora with a generic wellbeing slogan. Keep both halves. The Learning Area whakataukī on the official subject page is *He oranga ngākau, he pikinga waiora* — given there as "Positive feelings in your heart will raise your sense of self-worth." It informs Significant Learning. It is not a second definition of hauora, and it is not a substitute for the official sentence.
Health Studies, not Health
The official Level 1 subject is Health Studies. Use that name. Hauora sits in all four Level 1 standards: 92008 asks you to understand hauora in a health-related context by applying a model of health; 92009 asks for a decision in relation to hauora; 92010 asks how factors influence hauora; 92011 asks how strategies enhance hauora. The idea does not change between those jobs. What changes is the job. On 92011, hauora is the thing strategies enhance. It is not one of the three assessable underlying concepts on that paper. That distinction belongs on the strategies pages. This page only needs the philosophy to be steady first.
Holistic means more than the body
Holistic wellbeing is the official description of hauora. Official subject commentary names the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual dimensions of people's lives, and says they interconnect. That one official sentence is enough here. The later page on holistic dimensions teaches the two published lists, including the collective and the environmental aspects Big Idea 1 names. Hauora can be understood in diverse ways according to a person's values, cultures, experiences, identities and worldview. That is official Big Idea 1 language. Diversity of understanding is not a licence to invent a new definition.
Hauora is not a model, and not wellness
A model of health is "a guide to understanding hauora according to aspects or dimensions of the model." Official examples include Te Wheke, Te Whare Tapa Whā, Fonua and Fonofale. The list is not closed. This page names those examples and stops. It does not describe their parts, draw them, or treat any one of them as hauora itself. The later page on applying a model teaches the 92008 craft: it is hauora that an activity affects, not a labelled part of a model. Physical activity as the *context* is a PE overlap. The 2025 National Moderator's Report is explicit: Zumba-as-stress-relief and similar physical-activity contexts are not considered suitable for Health Studies assessment. The primary focus must be Food and Nutrition, Mental Health, or Relationships and Sexuality — not the physical activity itself.
More than personal choice and individual responsibility
Official subject statement, restated as Big Idea 3: understanding hauora requires the complex, interconnected nature of personal, interpersonal and societal perspectives. Hauora is "not just a matter of personal choice and individual responsibility, but is part of our complex, interwoven, interpersonal, and societal fabric." Personal is what sits with one person: knowledge, beliefs, values, energy, a medical condition already named in a given scenario. Interpersonal is what sits between people: whānau relationships, peer pressure, a coach, a friend group. Societal is what sits in the wider setting: laws, media, school rules, cost, advertising, what food is actually available, whether a service exists. A one-person "they should try harder" sentence cannot carry hauora. Positive action is needed at all three levels. That is official. It is also why later strategy pages ask for planned actions that are not only personal tips.
Strengths-based, and only the three Key Areas of Learning
A strengths-based approach is an official requirement for learning tasks and assessment activities, "given these sensitivities" around hauora. Strengths-based here means you look at what already supports hauora, what people and communities can draw on, and what would enhance hauora — not a tour of damage, and not a story that a person is the problem. It does not mean you pretend pressures are imaginary. Sleep loss, food insecurity, exclusion and unsafe relationships are real. The move is to keep the person whole while you name the facts around them, and to refuse graphic or voyeuristic detail. Every Health Studies standard insists that the context is one or more of: Food and Nutrition 2. Mental Health 3. Relationships and Sexuality A Key Area of Learning is not a decoration you name in a heading. The 2025 National Moderator's Report failed work that applied a model to an activity with no obvious KAoL connection: the result was generalised wellbeing statements, not Health Studies evidence. Cooking that never touches food-and-nutrition ideas is too thin. A single relaxation exercise is too thin for Mental Health. A PE practical is the wrong subject. Big Idea 2 says tiakitanga, manaakitanga and whanaungatanga are vital to enhance the hauora of individuals, whānau and communities. Official unpacking also names Pacific concepts such as vā. This page records that those names exist in the Learning Matrix. It does not define them, translate them for decoration, or use them as headings to make a paragraph look more Māori. The same rule covers tikanga, mana whenua, rongoā and maramataka. Official sources name them. Official sources refuse to fully define mātauranga or Pacific concepts. Filling the gap from memory would be fabrication.
This page teaches dimensions. It does not re-teach the official sentence
hauora remains "a Māori philosophy of holistic wellbeing grounded in bodies of mātauranga unique to Aotearoa New Zealand." The previous page defended that sentence against wellness, against a model, and against "just choose better". Do not spend this page reciting it as if the job were finished. The job now is holism: what official Health Studies names when it says hauora is more than the physical. If you can delete the dimension names and the sentence still reads as a lifestyle poster, you have left holism. If you can delete "Māori philosophy" and "mātauranga unique to Aotearoa New Zealand" and the paragraph still feels finished, you have swapped hauora for wellness again. Keep both the philosophy and the dimensions.
Two official lists sit together. They are not a sixth model
Official sources give you two published lists. Learn both. Do not glue them into a new Whetū model. **Subject commentary and the National Moderator's Report.** The subject page names the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual dimensions of people's lives, and says they interconnect. The 2025 National Moderator's Report requires descriptions to cover mental and emotional, physical, social and spiritual aspects. Mental and emotional are one official paired aspect in that report, even though the subject sentence lists both words. 2. **Big Idea 1 and the 92008 unpacking.** A holistic approach goes beyond the physical and can draw on the spiritual, the collective and the environmental. Holism has breadth and depth as it relates to individuals, whānau, communities and the surrounding environment. The four NMR aspects are what internal descriptions must cover. Collective and environmental stop holism collapsing into one person's body, mood, friends and "inner peace". They are official aspects of a holistic approach, not extra walls this page has added to Te Whare Tapa Whā. Hauora can be understood in diverse ways according to a person's values, cultures, experiences, identities and worldview. That is official Big Idea 1 language. Diversity of understanding is not a licence to invent a seventh dimension, a personal wellness slice, or a fuller mātauranga.
Dimensions of people's lives are not parts of a model
A model of health is "a guide to understanding hauora according to aspects or dimensions of the model." Official examples still include Te Wheke, Te Whare Tapa Whā, Fonua and Fonofale. Those names are taught on later pages. This page does not describe their parts, draw them, or treat any one of them as the official dimension list. Official 92008 unpacking keeps three objects: the activity, hauora, and the model. It is hauora that is affected. The model is a later frame for saying in what way. The dimensions on this page are official names for aspects of people's lives and of a holistic approach. They are not taha tinana, taha hinengaro, taha whānau or taha wairua, and they are not tentacles or a fale. Writing "the physical dimension was affected" as if a labelled box changed is the same collapse as "taha tinana was affected". Write that hauora was affected, then say in what aspect of the person's — or the whānau's, or the community's — life the evidence shows that change. Because hauora is holistic, later 92008 work should reflect holism. Official unpacking also says ākonga may not need to refer to all parts of a *model* in the same level of detail. That permission is about a chosen model on 92008. It is not permission, on this page or in the NMR, to skip spiritual, or to write only about the body.
Physical is one aspect. It is not the subject, and it is not PE
The physical dimension is the body-and-energy side of a person's life as it shows up in a Health Studies context: food actually eaten, sleep, energy for the day, feeling unwell or well in the body. Official holism starts here only so it can go beyond here. A paragraph that stops at "they ate vegetables, so hauora improved" has not left the physical, and it has not yet done Food and Nutrition as a Key Area of Learning. Physical-as-a-dimension is not physical-activity-as-the-context. The 2025 National Moderator's Report treats Zumba-as-stress-relief and similar physical-activity contexts as PE, and not suitable for Health Studies. Labelling the circuit "physical dimension" does not change the subject. Food and Nutrition can talk about what food does in the body. Mental Health can notice tiredness or energy. Relationships and Sexuality can notice the body only where the official context actually requires it, and never as a PE practical. This page does not give medical advice, calorie counts, or training plans.

Hauora as a Māori philosophy of holistic wellbeing
This page is about hauora as Health Studies uses the word. The official definition, printed on every Health Studies achievement standard that names it, is exact: hauora is a Māori philosophy of holistic wellbeing grounded in bodies of mātauranga unique to Aotearoa New Zealand. That sentence is the whole official definition. Philosophy here means a way of understanding wellbeing, not a medical diagnosis and not a brand. If you can delete "Māori philosophy" and "mātauranga unique to Aotearoa New Zealand" and the sentence still feels finished, you have replaced hauora with a generic wellbeing slogan. Keep both halves.
The previous page already taught hauora as Health Studies uses the word: a Māori philosophy of holistic wellbeing grounded in bodies of mātauranga unique to Aotearoa New Zealand. That official sentence is still the definition. This page does a different job. It teaches what holistic commits you to write about — the official dimensions of people's lives, and the extra official aspects Big Idea 1 names — without turning those names into a new model, a wellness wheel, or an invented account of mātauranga.
This page is about Te Whare Tapa Whā as Health Studies uses it: one official **example** of a model of health. The official 92008 definition of a model is exact. A model of health is a guide to understanding hauora according to aspects or dimensions of the model. Official examples include Te Wheke, Te Whare Tapa Whā, Fonua and Fonofale. The list is not closed. This page teaches the official names of this model's parts, the official house metaphor in official language, and how a student uses that guide without treating the house as hauora, as the only model, or as a decoration stuck on a non-Health-Studies activity.
This page is about Te Wheke as Health Studies uses the name: one official **example** of a model of health on Achievement Standard 92008. The official definition of a model of health is exact: a guide to understanding hauora according to aspects or dimensions of the model. Official examples include Te Wheke, Te Whare Tapa Whā, Fonua and Fonofale. The list is not closed. Subject Learning Outcomes v2 repeat that models may include those four and are not limited to them.
This page teaches two official example models of health: Fonofale and Fonua. Achievement Standard 92008 defines a model of health as "a guide to understanding hauora according to aspects or dimensions of the model." Its example list is Te Wheke, Te Whare Tapa Whā, Fonua and Fonofale. The list is not closed — "examples include" is the official wording. This page teaches the two Pacific names on that list. It does not reteach Te Whare Tapa Whā or Te Wheke. Those belong to later pages.
Applying a model to a health-related activity
This page is about applying a model of health to a health-related activity. That is the 92008 craft. 92008 is an **internal** Health Studies standard. Its official title is *Demonstrate understanding of hauora in a health-related context through the application of a model of health*. The previous pages already taught hauora as the official sentence, and holism as the official dimensions of people's lives. Later pages teach the named official models. A later page on 92008 evidence teaches planning, Key Area of Learning grounding as a planning job, staying with self or others, and realistic short- and long-term conclusions. This page does not do those jobs. It teaches three objects that must stay unglued — the activity, hauora, and the model — and the two craft moves official Explanatory Note 1 actually asks for: supporting evidence from this activity, and interconnections among the parts of the chosen model in relation to the activity.
This page is about preparing 92008 evidence. 92008 is an **internal** Health Studies standard. Its official title is *Demonstrate understanding of hauora in a health-related context through the application of a model of health*. Hauora as the official sentence, the official dimensions of holism, and the named official models are earlier Topic 1 pages. How to keep activity, hauora and a model of health as three objects, how to write supporting evidence from a specific activity, and how parts of a chosen model interconnect are the applying-a-model page. This page does not reteach those crafts. It teaches how that writing has to *appear as a pack*: what to keep, what fails, how the activity has to stay grounded in a Key Area of Learning, how the focus has to stay on self or others, and how Excellence conclusions stay realistic.
This page is about Food and Nutrition as a Health Studies Key Area of Learning. It is not a standard of its own. It teaches the context later 92010 and 92011 papers can rotate into, and the food ideas 92008 and 92009 still need if the activity or the dilemma is about food. The job is simple to name and easy to flatten: food, in this subject, is more than nutrients.
Factors that influence food choice
This page is about factors that influence food choice inside Food and Nutrition. It is not a standard of its own. It spends craft you already have — personal, interpersonal and societal factors — on the food scene later 92010 and 92011 papers can rotate into, and on the food ideas 92008 and 92009 still need if the activity or the dilemma is about what people actually eat.
Strategies that enhance hauora through food
This page is about strategies that enhance hauora through food inside Food and Nutrition. It is not a standard of its own. It spends craft you already have — a strategy as a plan of action, the official health-promotion lens, and the official socio-ecological lens — on the food scene later 92010 and 92011 papers can rotate into. The official lenses here are health promotion and socio-ecological actions. Not a cooking practical. Whetū cannot assess a real meal.
