Key concepts
Geography starts with a question, not a topic
Students often arrive with a topic: volcanoes, climate change, Auckland housing, “the Pacific”. A topic is a drawer. The organising question is what you *do* once the drawer is open. “Volcanoes” is not yet Geography. “Cone volcanoes are clustered along the Taupō Volcanic Zone; they are there because magma reaches the surface along that plate-boundary setting; people care because land use, infrastructure and settlements sit inside that same environment” is Geography. If a paragraph would read the same after you swapped the place name, you have written a topic summary. The Ministry is explicit that there is no prescribed order and no prescribed case-study list. Schools choose contexts in Aotearoa New Zealand and the wider Pacific. What is not optional is the kind of thinking.
What is where — location is not a pattern
What is where has two halves, and students usually do only the first. The first half is identification: this is a wetland; this is a bach; this is a meander. The second half is spatial distribution — the spread of **multiple instances** of a phenomenon over an area. A phenomenon, in the official 91932 meaning, is a type of geographic feature, object or event that can be mapped. One wetland is a site. Wetlands across a region are a distribution. One earthquake is an event. Earthquake activity as a mapped pattern is a distribution. Describe that spread with pattern language, not with “they are all over the place”. Official unpacking examples include clustered and linear. You will also need proximity, outliers, gaps and scale. “The dairies sit in a line along State Highway 1, mostly within two hundred metres of the road, with one outlier three kilometres inland at the old railway settlement” is a what-is-where sentence. “There are dairies in this town” is not.
Why there — a factor, a process, or both
Why there has an official vocabulary you must not blur. A factor is a characteristic or circumstance: slope, aspect, soil, shelter, distance from a highway, a planning rule, a rainfall total. A process is a sequence of actions or steps. Longshore drift is a process only when you can run the sequence: wind direction, swash angle, backwash angle, repeated wave action, sediment transport, spit. “Coastal processes made a spit” is a label. “The earthquake shaped the coast” is worse, because an earthquake is a phenomenon — an event you can map — not a process. The 2025 91934 assessment report named that confusion. Why-there is also where students substitute a feeling for a cause. People built on the floodplain because it is flat, the soil is alluvial, the river was a transport route, and the town was already there when the stopbanks went in. Those are factors. “They did not care about flooding” is not.
Why care — consequence, not mood
Why care is not a feeling you report. It is a geographic consequence you can point at. An impact is a change to a place or environment — short or long term, positive or negative, social, economic, environmental or political. An implication, on 91934, is a real or potential effect, outcome or **response for people** who live in or near the environment: move the surf club, stop fishing this reach, farm the floodplain differently. A geographic challenge, on 91935, is a topic, problem or opportunity related to an environment that people can have a response to. So a why-care sentence has to name *who* and *what changes*. “The dune line at Pebble Bay is eroding, so the first row of baches is now inside the active beach system, and the regional council is deciding whether to hold the line or retreat” is why care. “Erosion is a serious problem and we should all care about the coast” is a slogan. “I feel sad for the families” is a mood. Neither of those last two sentences would change if the place were different.
Geographic thinking holds pattern, process and change together
Geographic thinking, in the Ministry’s wording, considers where features of te taiao are, how they interconnect, and how they can change over time. The understandings it names are patterns, processes, relationships, interactions, change and systems. Interconnection is the move students skip when they write three separate paragraphs and call it Geography. The Ministry’s own illustration is an awa: the awa holds up the ecosystem; the ecosystem holds up the bank and keeps the water clean; people take water and gravel and fish; those uses change the awa; the changed awa then changes what people can do next. That is one system, not four topics. A sentence that mentions “the river and also the town” has noticed two things. A sentence that shows how a change in one becomes a change in the other has started to think geographically. “What is where” can be answered for today. “Why there” often needs yesterday. “Why care” often needs tomorrow. If your answer could have been written from a single photograph with no before and no after, check whether you have done all three jobs.
People stand inside te taiao
Te taiao is the space you stand in or observe. Features of te taiao are interconnected, **including people who live within the space**. They include features made by people, such as buildings, and natural features, such as mountains and climates. 91934 repeats the same idea in assessment language: people are part of the environment. That stops the old split in which “physical geography” looks at landforms and “human geography” looks at towns. A marae on a coastal plain, a stopbank, a State Highway bridge and a dairy shed are geographic features of the same environment as the floodplain and the channel. The Ministry also says that in Aotearoa New Zealand, tangata whenua hold strong relationships with te taiao, and that students will learn how Te Tiriti o Waitangi is important in Geography. Those are official subject claims. Quote them when they are doing work, and stop. Do not write people out of the picture, and do not add a te reo word as flavour and call the paragraph bicultural.
The kete is a toolkit; the four standards are four jobs
The Ministry names a Geography kete: tools for understanding and engaging with te taiao. Officially it includes perspectives, knowledge systems and tikanga. Read that as a toolkit, not as a metaphor you sprinkle into a conclusion. A kete you never open is not in use. Use an official term when it is doing geographic work in the sources in front of you. Do not invent a classroom version of tikanga or kaitiakitanga. The four standards then ask you to do one part of the organising question more carefully. **91932** (internal) puts the three questions onto one phenomenon and its impacts on place. **91933** (internal) reads what-is-where out of data you have processed. **91934** (external) writes why-there as natural-process sequences, and why-care as impacts then implications. **91935** (external) writes why-care as decision-making on a geographic challenge in the wider Pacific, including Aotearoa New Zealand. Hear which question is being asked. Do not treat the four standards as four different subjects.
The three jobs are a method, including when the place has changed
Quoting Gritzner is not the work. The work is doing the three jobs to a named environment so that a swapped place name would break the paragraph. **What is where** still needs more than one instance of one phenomenon, with arrangement language (clustered, linear, gap, outlier) and a stated area and scale. **Why there** still needs a factor (circumstance) or a process (sequence of actions) that belongs here — not a family name, and not a 91934 magma-rise dump parked on a Topic 0 page. **Why care** still needs a change to this place, or a response available to people who live in it. Change over time does not invent a fourth job. What *was* where: the same type, at an earlier date, in the same area. Why it sat there then: the circumstance or sequence that held at that date. Why the change matters now: an impact on place, or an implication for people, that follows from the new arrangement. Two dates of scoria cones — standing versus quarried — are still one phenomenon. They are not a mapping-craft lesson (that page already owns the second mark-set) and they are not a tectonic sequence. If the only thing that changed in your paragraph is the year in the first sentence, you have not yet done why-care.
Evidence a stranger could use is not atmosphere
Evidence on this page is specific geographic detail a stranger could check: a named place, a count, a distance, a cardinal point, a stated scale. “Lots of volcanoes in Auckland” names a region and a mood. It does not say how many, how they are arranged, where the gap is, or which cone sits apart. “Near the beach”, “over time”, and “a lot of houses” fail the same test. A useful what-is-where sentence carries at least two of those checkable pieces plus an arrangement word. A useful why-there sentence names a circumstance or a step that belongs to *this* field, *this* spit, *this* floodplain — not “New Zealand is on a plate boundary” as a universal sticker. A useful why-care sentence names who, and what has changed for them, in this place. Atmosphere is what is left when you delete the names, the numbers and the arrangement and the paragraph still sounds like Geography.
Te taiao is the space you stand in
Te taiao is not a poetic rename for “nature”. The Ministry’s subject description is exact: te taiao is **the space you stand in or observe**. Features of te taiao are interconnected, **including people who live within the space**. They include features made by people, such as buildings, and natural features, such as mountains and climates. The same page says Geography is about te taiao and the interconnections between whenua, wai, āhuarangi and koiora — land, water, climate and living things. Those four are official subject language. They are not a decoration for the first line of an answer. Read the definition slowly, because students usually drop half of it. “The space you stand in” already refuses the old split in which nature sits over there and people sit in towns. A dairy shed, a marae, a State Highway bridge and a frost fan are features of the same te taiao as the terrace, the channel and the prevailing wind. “Or observe” matters too. You do not have to live in a glacial valley to study it. You do have to treat it as a space with interconnected features, not as a postcard. The Ministry’s own illustration of interconnection is an awa. The awa supports the ecosystem around it; the ecosystem holds up the bank and keeps the water clean; people use the awa for resources; those uses have impacts within te taiao. That is one system. A sentence that mentions “the river and also the town” has noticed two things. A sentence that shows how a change in one becomes a change in the other has started to use te taiao as the subject uses it. Because people are already inside the space, you cannot finish a paragraph on dunes or frost or a floodplain and then add “this also affects people”. The packhouse, the irrigation take and the houses on the terrace were inside te taiao before you started writing. The previous page taught that habit as geographic thinking. This page is why the habit is not optional: it is in the official definition of the space itself.

What is where, why there, why care
Geography at Level 1 is built on one question. The Ministry of Education names it, and cites Gritzner (2002), as **What is where, why there, and why care?** That is not a motto for the top of a book. It is three jobs, in order. If you only describe a place, you have done the first job. If you only say a flood was devastating, you have jumped to a feeling and skipped the geography.
The last page taught the question Geography is built on. This page teaches the official words you ask that question *of*. The Ministry of Education defines te taiao as the space you stand in or observe. Features of that space are interconnected, **including people who live within it**. They include features people have made, such as buildings, and natural features, such as mountains and climates. Geography, in the same official sentence, is about te taiao and the interconnections between whenua, wai, āhuarangi and koiora. You are not looking at nature over there. You are looking at the space you already stand in.
Evidence and geographic terminology
The last two pages taught the question Geography is built on, and the official words you ask that question of. This page teaches how a marker can tell you actually did the work. Every written response, at every grade, on all four Level 1 standards, needs evidence and geographic terminology. That is not a later polish. It is a Subject Learning Outcome on 91932, 91934 and 91935, and it is how 91933’s findings stay attached to the visuals you made. If a stranger could not find the feature, follow the cause, or see who is affected, you have not yet given evidence. If the subject’s own words sit in the first sentence and then do no work, you have not yet used terminology.
Perspectives, values, and power
The last three pages taught the question Geography is built on, the official words you ask that question of, and how a sentence is proved. This page teaches the official language for *who is looking*, and what that looking can do to te taiao. The Ministry’s fourth Big Idea is exact: **perspectives and power influence te taiao**. People shape te taiao through the decisions they make, and those decisions are influenced by perspectives and by power. If you cannot tell a perspective from a viewpoint, later 91935 writing will collapse into “people disagree” and the marker will not know which official job you thought you were doing.
Phenomena and spatial distribution
This page teaches the first job of Achievement Standard 91932: choosing a phenomenon you can actually map, and describing its spatial distribution. The official title of the standard is longer — *Demonstrate understanding of the spatial distribution of a phenomenon and its impacts on place* — and the later Topic 1 pages take the rest of that title. If you cannot name the phenomenon, and you cannot describe how its instances are spread, nothing that follows will be Geography.

Mapping and describing a distribution
This page teaches the showing job of Achievement Standard 91932: annotating a map so a stranger can see the spatial distribution you can already describe, and treating GIS and mapping skills as spatial tools rather than as a technology exam. The official title of the standard is longer — *Demonstrate understanding of the spatial distribution of a phenomenon and its impacts on place* — and the earlier Topic 1 pages already took most of that title.
